Fremont

Fremont bills itself as the Center Of The Universe. The way that visitors are drawn to this colorful neighborhood, that just may be true. Once you visit Fremont, you will probably find yourself compelled to come back and visit again and again.

This fun, artistic community is located in Seattle, along the Lake Washington Ship Canal, north of Queen Anne Hill. Once you enter the neighborhood, you can spend several hours just browsing through the variety of shops, searching for vintage clothing, collectibles, antiques, and other items. If you like movies, you can visit the Outdoor Cinema, where you can see everything from mainstream favorites, to cult and indie movies.

If you dare, you can visit the Fremont Troll. This denizen of Fremont resides under the Aurora Bridge. You don't need to worry about becoming a troll appetizer. The troll much prefers dining on cars rather than people. When you see him, you'll find a Volkswagen in his grasp, about to be devoured. The troll even made a brief appearance in the movie "10 Things I Hate About You." Every Halloween, the Fremont community pays tribute to the troll with a "Trollaween" party, which starts under the bridge, and moves on to other art sites and events in the area.

"Waiting For The Interurban" is an interactive sculpture depicting 5 people and a dog under a shelter. It was created in 1979 by sculptor Richard Beyer. Over the years, the figures have been seen sporting costumes and other displays, celebrating birthdays, weddings, and other events.

The Statue Of Lenin has created some controversy since it was installed. The statue was originally installed in Slovakia in 1988. After the 1989 revolution, an American, Lewis Carpenter, who was teaching in Slovakia at the time, brought the statue back to his home in Issaquah, before the statue was moved to it's current location in Fremont.

If you like parades, you'll love the Fremont Solstice Parade. It is held every year on the Saturday nearest to the Summer Solstice. The parade is a demonstration of creativity, art and community. The Fremont Solstice Parade consists of 10 floats, plus any ensembles and individuals that care to participate. You'll see dancers, bodypainting, and many other examples of Fremont fun and creativity. Anyone is welcome to show their creativity, and to participate in the parade.

Fremont is one of those communities where you'll find surprises around every corner. Once you visit, you may find your self coming back to visit the "Center Of The Universe" again.
